1. Disclose how it was made
Etsy's creativity standards, introduced in 2024, allow items designed with AI tools from a seller's own prompts, but require sellers to say so. Etsy describes these as items 'designed by' the seller, and asks sellers to disclose AI use in the listing description. Read Etsy's current creativity standards and seller policy before you list, because the details are updated over time.
Disclosure also protects reviews: buyers who learn later that a piece was AI-made, and weren't told, are more likely to complain.
2. Check the generator's terms
Each image generator has its own terms for commercial use and ownership. Midjourney's terms, for example, depend on your subscription plan and, for larger businesses, on company revenue. Read the current terms for the tool and plan you use, and keep a record of your subscription at the time you made each image.
3. Make it yours
Avoid prompts that copy a living artist's style by name, trademarked characters or recognisable photographs. Etsy and buyers increasingly reject look-alike work, and intellectual-property complaints can close a listing. Curate, edit and combine: the most successful AI-assisted shops have a recognisable point of view.
4. Prepare the file for print
Generated images often need upscaling and cleaning before they print well: check hands, text, repeated patterns and soft areas at 100%. Then prepare each print ratio properly (see our print ratio guide) rather than stretching one file to fit every size.
Check the pixels against the sizes you sell: a 24×36 inch print needs 7200×10800 pixels at 300 DPI. Our print size calculator shows the largest size a file supports.
5. Use honest mockups
Show the artwork exactly as the buyer will receive it, at its true ratio, in the product you sell. Avoid mockups that regenerate or restyle the artwork itself: the image in the room should be your file, not a reinterpretation of it.
WallMock places your supplied image into the room instead of redrawing it with an image generator. The rooms themselves are digitally staged interiors, reviewed for the products and proportions they can show.

A pre-listing checklist
- AI use is disclosed in the listing as Etsy currently requires.
- You have checked the generator's terms for your plan.
- The artwork doesn't imitate a named artist, character or photo.
- The file is cleaned, upscaled and prepared for each ratio you sell.
- Mockups show the exact file, at its true ratio, in the product you sell.
Questions sellers ask
Can you sell AI-generated art on Etsy?
Etsy's creativity standards allow items designed with AI tools from your own prompts, provided you disclose it. Check Etsy's current policy before listing.
Do I need to say my art is AI-generated?
On Etsy, yes: sellers are asked to disclose AI use in the listing description. It is also the honest thing to tell buyers.
Can I use mockups made with AI?
Mockup rooms can be digitally staged, but the artwork shown must be your actual file at its true proportions, so buyers see what they will receive.
