The two-thirds guideline
A common interior guideline is that art above furniture looks balanced at about two thirds to three quarters of the furniture's width, including the frame. A single piece, a pair or a trio counts as one group: measure the whole group.
It is a guideline, not a law. Oversized art can be dramatic, and a smaller piece can work in a quiet corner. But if a print looks lost above a sofa, it is almost always too small.

Above a sofa
| Sofa width | Balanced art width | Sizes that work |
|---|---|---|
| 60 in (152 cm), loveseat | 40–45 in (100–115 cm) | 30×40 landscape, 14×42 panorama, or a pair of 20×30 portraits |
| 72 in (183 cm) | 48–54 in (120–137 cm) | 36×48 landscape, 16×48 panorama, or a trio of 16×20 portraits |
| 84 in (213 cm), three-seater | 56–63 in (142–160 cm) | 40×60 landscape, 20×60 panorama, or a trio of 18×24 portraits |
| 96 in (244 cm), large sofa | 64–72 in (163–183 cm) | 24×72 panorama or a trio of 20×30 portraits |
Hang the bottom of the frame about 6–10 inches (15–25 cm) above the back of the sofa, so the two read as one arrangement.
Above a bed
| Bed | Typical width | Balanced art width |
|---|---|---|
| Single / twin | 35–39 in (90–99 cm) | 23–29 in (59–74 cm) |
| Double / full | 53–54 in (135–137 cm) | 36–40 in (91–102 cm) |
| US queen / UK king | 59–60 in (150–152 cm) | 40–45 in (100–115 cm) |
| UK super king | 71 in (180 cm) | 47–53 in (120–135 cm) |
| US king | 76 in (193 cm) | 51–57 in (129–145 cm) |
Measure the headboard rather than the mattress if it is wider. Leave enough space above the headboard that nobody hits the frame when sitting up: about 8–12 inches (20–30 cm).

Above a sideboard, console or desk
Sideboards and consoles are often styled with lamps or objects, so the art can be a little narrower: about half to two thirds of the furniture's width. Hang it lower than you think, about 4–8 inches (10–20 cm) above the top, so the art and the objects work together.

On an open wall
Without furniture, a common gallery guideline puts the centre of the art about 57–60 inches (145–152 cm) from the floor, roughly eye level. On a narrow wall, such as a pier between doors, choose a tall format and centre it on that wall.
What this means for listing photos
Buyers judge size from the furniture in your mockups. Show your main size at a believable scale above familiar furniture, and use a separate size image for the exact dimensions. If a buyer orders a 12×16 print after seeing it fill the wall above a sofa, the listing has set the wrong expectation.
