How mats are sized

The mat opening is cut slightly smaller than the print so the mat holds the print's edges; about ⅛ inch (3 mm) on each side is common. A slightly deeper bottom border (bottom weighting) is a traditional gallery touch. Read more in our frame and mat proportions guide.
